THE MARCH NUGGET

Build Discipline to Succeed!

A lot of clients ask how they can stay motivated throughout the year. The answer is in the difference between motivation and discipline.

Motivation will naturally ebb and flow along with the inevitable challenges life throws at us. To really achieve goals we need to build discipline.

Discipline removes choice and puts us on ‘autopilot’ so we keep doing the things we said we would even when we don’t feel like it.

So, here are 3 of my tips on how to build discipline:

  1. Accountability

    • Telling others about your goals is a good way to keep yourself accountable when ‘future you’ doesn’t want to do the thing you said you would.

    • Partnering with a friend or colleague to go to a weekly class is a great way to keep on track and to remove the ‘choice’ of whether to turn up or not.

    • Getting a PT is a great to keep you accountable with regular check-ins and an achievable plan. Committing to a ‘training block’ when your motivation is high helps to ensure you keep turning up even when motivation drops.

  2. Identity

    • Think about how you would feel if you achieved your goals. What would that person do? How would that person act and behave? Becoming that person today helps to shift your identity to a new version of yourself. If you see yourself through a new lens where training and a healthy lifestyle is part of who you are then good choices become more autopilot.

  3. Reward

    • Discipline doesn’t mean removing the little things we enjoy. To keep discipline, it’s really important to build reward in.

    • Achieving our goals is about a long term lifestyle change and so whatever we do has to be sustainable. That means, identifying life’s little treats that are ‘non-negotiable’ for you and working them into your plan as rewards for staying on track.

    • Use the 80-20 rule. 80% wholefoods still leaves room to share that bottle of wine with a loved one at the weekend or, in my case, a pain au choc or a Rudy’s pizza!

    • Reward also comes from discipline. When you commit to your goals and show up regularly for yourself you’ll notice a whole lot of other ‘rewards’ including better mood, sleep and energy which will make it easier to keep building discipline.

This month I caught up with my inspiring client Marie. Click below to read more about her wellness journey.

A couple of other things that have caught my eye recently:

1. EAT REAL FOOD

Some of you may have seen Eddie Abbew on Instagram. Whilst his delivery might be controversial, his core message of eating real food and being wary of packaging goods and Ultra Processed Foods is a good one and is getting people to sit up and take notice.

I’ve been listening to this fantastic book by Gabor Mate. In it he describes the science behind how repressed feelings and emotions can cause physiological stress that can lead to chronic conditions. Its a great listen and for me underlines how important self awareness, listening to our gut and setting boundaries is for our long term wellness.
