Resistance Training - The Gift that Keeps on Giving

Some of you may have watched the Jon Snow documentary series “How to Live to 100” last year. In it, he visits the Loma Linda community, America’s only “blue zone” town where residents have +10 years life expectancy vs average. He’s seen joining an over 85s resistance training class at 06:30 am with interviewees talking about how important strength training is to their way of life.

In my opinion, this is no coincidence. Resistance training is crucial to counteracting the effects of ageing both physically and cognitively and I passionately believe that this is especially true for women.

Read this month’s blog to find out why.

THE SPOTLIGHT

This month I caught up with my client Katie, an amazing artist whose colourful and vibrant art always wows! Click below to read more about Katie’s wellness journey.

LIVING NURTURED

A couple of other things that have caught my eye recently:

1. 30 PLANTS

You’ve probably seen Tim Spector on social media or in newspapers recently promoting the multiple benefits of good gut health. I often talk to clients about trying to eat more whole foods and it’s great that Tim Spector is bringing so much more awareness to this. One of the key pillars of Tim’s approach is trying to eat at least ‘30 different plants’ a week. This includes the obvious fruit and veg but also things like nuts, seeds, legumes, herbs, spices and even coffee and dark (>80%) chocolate too! He particularly advises to eat the rainbow, looking for lots of different colour on your plate and trying to increase the intake of polyphenol rich plants. With so much information out there it can often be overwhelming but I like this for its simplicity and because its so easy to get started with. We’ve had some fun in our house keeping a (loose) tally this year, so why not try introducing your own mini competition at home to get your numbers up too!

Tim Spector is well worth a follow for those on Instagram and his book Food for Life is a Sunday Times Best Seller for anyone interested in learning more.

2. RESISTANCE TRAINING

I know many of you like me, are big fans of Dr Rangan Chaterjees’s Feel better, live more podcast. I loved listening to his recent episode with Dr Gabrielle Lyon who talks in more depth about the benefits of resistance training as well as eating more protein. I highly recommend giving this a listen or having a read of her book Forever Strong.
